Choose your card's brand. If you don't see it, follow the steps under How to check any gift card.

How to check any gift card

These work for store cards, restaurant cards, and small local shops that use their own cards.

  1. Look at the back of the card. Most cards print a website or a toll-free number for balance checks. Calling usually takes under a minute.
  2. Ask at the register. Any cashier at the store or restaurant that sold the card can scan it and tell you the balance.
  3. Check your receipt or email. eGift cards come with a link that usually shows the balance.
  4. Add it to the store's app. Many brands show your balance in the app once you add the card.

Turn gift cards into holiday gifts

A lot of gift cards get spent on presents for other people. Here's how to stretch them.

Check before you shop

Know your exact balance so you're not surprised at the register.

Split the payment

For a prepaid Visa or Mastercard, tell the cashier the exact amount to charge to the card, then pay the rest another way. Most stores can split a payment like this.

Register prepaid cards to shop online

Many prepaid Visa and Mastercard gift cards need your ZIP code registered on the issuer's site before they work online.

Use up small leftovers

Combine a few low balances on one purchase, or use them on stocking stuffers.

Watch for fees and dates

Store gift cards rarely expire, but some prepaid cards charge monthly fees after a year. Spend those first.

Swap cards you won't use

Gift card exchange sites let you trade a card you won't use for cash or a card you will.

Gift card scam warning

No real government agency, utility, or tech support company asks to be paid in gift cards. If someone asks for your gift card numbers, it's a scam. Report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
